AVOEC is coming to Brighton’s Marlborough Theatre, all the way from Budapest, to bring you a great performance ::: RMQS – “Raising My Queer Self”. AVOEC was established by Luiza Moraes and Lori Baldwin, who met in Budapest in 2013. They bonded over a mutual dissatisfaction with institutions, and decided to make art together. They have been performing since 2014, using different mediums and settings, picking apart the queer self, in Maastricht, Amsterdam, Budapest and Berlin. Now, they are coming to London (Electra Theatre), and Brighton (Marlborough Theatre)!

AVOEC creates work that disrupts binaries, embraces uncertainty and revels in quiet spectacles. Working between the realms of performance, theatre and live art, their work is concerned with the experimental edges of traditional art making.

RMQS is a versatile performance that combines text, movement, sound, presence and absence as it engages with issues surrounding being queer – particularly within the process of growing up in an environment that is not accepting of a non-hetero identity. It creates a queer feminist framework for addressing questions of (not) belonging, eroticism and gender.

The artists’ personal experiences and questions work as a reference point. From this, they connect to a wider socio-political context and invite the audience into the exploration. A space of vulnerability and non-invasive exposure is created through the act of challenging an identitiary comfort zone. They create an environment that invites the audience to be present and share the experience with them. They explore the interstices of the lived moment, and open up our perception to all that exists in the situation.

I have many things I’d like to say to you / but I don’t know where to begin.
Do I start with you / me / them?
Do I start at the beginning / middle / end?
RMQS is what wasn’t, what couldn’t have been.
RMQS is self-exposure and vulnerability.
RMQS is the space in between.

RMQS was made with support from the Workshop Foundation (Műhely Alapítvány) and SÍN Kulturális Központ.
